Azithromycin is an antibiotic of the macrolide class. In late 2023, Germany's drug regulatory agency requested a European review of the harm-benefit balance of oral and intravenous azithromycin. It called attention to the increased resistance of several bacterial species to azithromycin in conjunction with the overuse of this antibiotic. In mid-2025, the European Commission endorsed the conclusions of the European Medicines Agency (EMA). What main changes have been adopted in order to optimise the use of azithromycin?
