Primary biliary cholangitis is a rare disease of the intrahepatic biliary tract. It is characterised by progressive destruction of small bile ducts, which leads to cholestasis by reducing bile flow from the liver to the intestine. About 90% of affected patients are women, and it generally develops after the age of 40 years. The main clinical manifestations are pruritus and fatigue, which are consequences of chronic cholestasis. Hepatic complications tend to develop after several years, some of which are fatal, such as fibrosis, cirrhosis, oesophageal varices, liver failure and liver cancer
